Porkapalooza

Truth and Hope Show Notes

Oink! Today's edition of the Truth and Hope Report is all about pork, with a round-up of recent pork spending news, including:

  •

The bi-partisan sham of earmarks reform, and how the House is becoming a House of Corruption.

  •
  • Who got the most earmark money in the last appropriating season and who got none at all.
  •
  • In the "for the Children" Health Care bill recently passed by the House is a secret provision that raises
  •

Medicare Payments to certain favored hospitals through bizarre mechanations (ex: one hospital located on the Wisconsin-Michigan, border 2o0 miles from Chicago  was declared to "in Chicago" in order to receive higher

  • Medicare payouts. By the way, did I mention the fiscally responsible Congress doing this as Medicare's headed towards bankruptcy? (Hat Tip: Captain's Quarters)

The Deficit Drops No Thanks to the Democrats

It turns out that the Bush Administration overestimated the deficit for the last budget passed in the Republican Congress. We have record revenues, but Democrats continue to insist the problem is the Bush Tax Cuts. If we have record revenues, our problem is that we spend too much money. (Hat Tip: Captain's Quarters)

Muslim Tolerance Update

Podcast Show Notes

Pakistan says that 1.3 billion Muslims would turn into terrorists should the U.S. bomb Mecca and Medina in response to Tom Tancredo's threat against the two cities. Hey, Tom, do you mind not giving ammo to Islamic extremists.

Meanwhile, despite efforts to draw tourists to Saudi Arabia (other than the religious pilgrims), Saudi Arabia refuses to allow foreigners to bring their own Bibles, while Egypt arrests two Christians for working for a website critical of Islam. What does it say that Saudi Arabians are scared of a Bible in another language or a cross? If it doesn't say something about Islam, it sure as heck does about how the Saudis and Egyptians view it.

Then we turn to a homosexual rights group that's ticked off that an ex-gay group will be able to handle out literature on school groups. The group basically argues that the ex-gay group doesn't deserve equal access because the gay rights movements is right and the ex-gay movement is akin to drinking and smoking. Thus, we're seeing what's normal and healthy being defined as abnormal and dangerous as we turn society upside down.

Meanwhile, a Washington, DC administration judge who filed a $54 million lawsuit may get his just desserts as the City prepares to fire him for his lack of judicial temperment. (Hat Tip: Needs of the Many)

Finally, in positive news, Mauritania is getting serious about ending slavery.

An Audience with the Don

I was honored to interview one of the great bloggers out there, Don Surber.  Don's a columnist for the Charleston Daily Mail and a blogger and he brings perspectives of both worlds to this fun interview. Issues discussed include:

  • Barry Bonds and 756
  • What the media doesn't understand about bloggers.
  • On Blogging's biggest Glenns: Glenn Reynolds and Glenn Greenwald
  • Why the issues are given short shrift in the Presidential election.
  • Why a newspaper columnist blogs.

Also we get the my big curious question. Has Don Surber ever considered a run for political office?

Obsessive Atheists Go On Anti-God Crusade

David Wallace Croft is another of the obsessive anti-God Atheists who waste their time trying to make the lives of others tedious (Hat Tip: Colussus of Rhodey). One example of Croft's inanity: complaining about a teacher who wore a T-shirt for a Christian University on campus.

Give me a break. Croft doesn't act like God doesn't exists, he acts like he's ticked at him.

Also on the agenda tonight.

Democrats give away $2 million to corporate America in a no-bid earmark the Pentagon. It's a sign of the fact that those looking for Democrats to "save us from Corporate America" must look elsewhere.

Finally, a reminder that parents have to be proactive in protecting their children because they can't expect help from the government.

Naive No More

Some young Conservatives are wising up.  They're not going to be tools for Republican politicians who won't follow conservative values.

Also:

The Big Pigs:  The members of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee took 30% of the earmarks in the Defense Appropriations Bill.

  •
  • Congressmen for Sale: You've heard about the Congressional Vote fiasco, where Democrats held open a vote to defeat an amendment barring benefits to illegals, and several Congressman switched their.  What you haven't seen is the numbers.  Democrats took big bucks from party bosses who knew they'd bought themselves some yes-people.

A Way to Victory in Iraq

Some folks seem to delight in reminding that the Presidential Candidate I support, John Cox of Illinois, faces an uphill battle in his race for the Presidency. This is a fact I’m well aware of, believe or not.

The unspoken question behind this is, “Why are you involved in a campaign where the odds are so stacked against you?” There are some things we must do, to quote President Kennedy, “not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” Sometimes, the options presented are so stark, that you must take your best shot and leave the rest in the hands of God.

We do face a genuine choice in this primary. Decades of professional politicians in Washington illustrated their inability to address the issues that matter to our country. I reached a conclusion last October to give an outsider a chance and after an interview with Mr. Cox I gave him my support in this race, and I hope other Americans join me.

The stakes are too high to continue with the choices we have now, particularly in regards to Iraq. In the Republican Debates, we’ve seen two stark choices presented on Iraq.

Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) is of the belief we should bring our troops home now. The stance is as irresponsible as it is well-intentioned. While many professional anti-war protestors may revel in the idea of US forces returning in defeat, many responsible critics of our initial decision to go into Iraq warn of the dangers of pulling out.

Former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft opposed the war going in, but now warns, “If we get out before Iraq is stable, the entire Middle East region might start to resemble Iraq today. Getting out is not a solution.”

An early pull-out now will lead to a regional conflict that will necessitate U.S. involvement and a higher death toll among U.S. Troops and more money spent on rebuilding.

On the other hand, other candidates support our current policy. While our brave soldiers our doing yeoman’s work, the policy they’re following is flawed from two standpoints. The first is the simple fact that underlying economic realities in Iraq are not being sufficiently addressed. As of this writing, less oil is being pumped in Iraq than at the time of the invasion. Iraq is sitting on 200 billion barrels oil with unemployment over 50% in Baghdad.

The political reality in America is also missed. What we’ve learned since the invasion of Iraq is that the American people are not tolerant of long, military engagements. If the American people don’t see progress, the troops will most likely be withdrawn, resulting in disaster.

While not all terrorism can be tied to poverty, the current economic situation is like a gasoline on a fire, and it’s not being adequately addressed. In this campaign, Mr. Cox understands the importance of bringing economic hope to the Iraqi people. He’s called for us to implement a Marshall plan for Iraq, focusing on getting the oil pumping and bringing prosperity to Iraq.

As Mr. Cox has pointed out, a prosperous Iraq will offer hope not only to Iraqis, but the Iranians and other nations who are being oppressed by rogue regimes. The opportunity for prosperity could help the young population of Iran throw off the chains of the mullahs, and lessen the power of jihadists worldwide.

Barring that, the picture in Iraq looks grim. Other candidates are presenting two paths for our nation to follow: both end at the same destination: a regional conflict that will threaten to become a world war.

Given that possibility, I’ll take the best shot we have at victory in Iraq. The potential rewards for our country are well worth the effort.

Democrats are Smarter on the Net

Show Notes

Here's what was discussed on the Truth and Hope Report: All the Democratic presidential candidates pledged to have a White House Blogger. While it was a bit of pandering (the audience was Yearly KOS for crying out loud, ) it did show that Democrats get the Internet to a far greater extent than Republicans do. If we want to win political races, we need to catch up. Also discussed:

Why not?: Arming the Iraqi populace doesn't sound like a horrible idea, particularly if you believe in gun rights. Those who are malicious are already armed.

A Relic of Another Age: The fairness doctrine was introduced when there were 500 radio stations around the country for fair one man would dominate the airwaves of 11,000. Hello! Now, we have 11,000. And while we're at it, how about a fairness doctrine for blogs?

Cracking down finally: The U.S. Government will get tough on illegals who steal folks social security numbers to get a job. Give them credit, please: U.S. forces kill the bomber of the golden mosque. Welcome Home, soldiers. The bodies of two airmen are returned after more than 35 years as MIAs over Vietnam.

An example of love: A lady from Massachusetts tries to help a troubled war-scarred Ugadan boy and sets an example for us all. Find the time. Easier said than done for most Christians (and half of pastors) when it comes to their relationship with God.

What's Wrong with the Republicans?

Truth and Hope Report Podcast Show Notes

While RNC holds their Summer Meeting and vote for a "throw money at it" solution to poverty, as well as getting tough on immigration (finally), a new study is raising alarm in young Republican circles as some warn of the current generation being lost for a generation.

What do Republicans need to do? They could make things better by growing a backbone, having some real vision beyond the next election, and educating on the what and why of what they believe. We discuss this in more detail on the podcast.

Also, the City of Cincinatti failed to take the property of a couple local residents, and the court ruled that the city had to pay legal fees. (Hat tip: The Sam Adams Alliance).

Finally, we salute 100 years of scouting and what it can teach us about the future.

The Politics of the Children

Podcast Show Notes

Here's what was discussed on the Truth and Hope Report:

Congress is sent to pass a $50 billion tax increase over the next five years with a much longer rate of cost for continuing the program. Much of the program's cost is hidden in a cigarette tax, but the American taxpayers will see the bill. To continue the program through 2017 using the approved increases without raising additional taxes would require 22 million new smokers and that's with the number of smokers falling.

'It's up to us to begin to think critically of government programs that sound nice. We need to start asking questions that liberal proponents don't want us to ask such as, "What's the long term cost?"

Also, with the rest of the Rightosphere, we pay tribute to 19 years of Rush.

(Item Discussed on Tonight's Podcast)

Don Surber calls for the expulsion of Alaska's GOP congressional delegation for numerous ethical lapses, and he's right and let's not forget the rest of the under investigation crowd (Hat Tip: Volokh Conspiracy).

I'm tired of corruption and I'm tired of my party being dragged down by corrupt actors like Ted Stevens (R-AK) and Don Young (R-AK). Those who want to hold onto these old dudes in order to "win" should remember how well that worked for Montana Republicans with Conrad Burns. Thanks to them, we now have Jon Tester and a Democrat Majority. BTW, did I mention that Young is going to get a serious Democrat challenger if he doesn't get a serious GOP challenge first?

Meanwhile, we turn our focus to the 600,000 acre blaze and how poor timber and land management practices made it happen.

Then we take a look at a primary plan proposed by a bi-partisan group of Senators to overhaul our Presidential Primary system. It's not the best available, but it sure beats what we have. It'll have a hard time getting through due to the fact that the current system has created the new kingmakers. (Hat Tip: Right Mind)

Then we take a look at how of America's two Sattelite Giants, Direct TV and Dish Network have given parents greater power over their kids' television viewing. Will parents who are concerned about TV content take advantage?

The Anti-Reform Ethics Bills

Award Nominated Truth and Hope Report Show Notes

The Democrats said they'd reform Congress, they haven't. The final draft of Ethics Reform arrived and it's weak, particularly when it comes to earmarks. The original Senate Ethics reforms bill required we have searchable listings of earmarks, the new one, forget about it. The Original Bill had the Senate Parliamentarian in charge of deciding if a bill was in compliance, the new bill puts Harry Reid in charge. I bet that makes Harry's lobbyist relatives happy. More info at Captain's Quarters and Red State.

Congressman Zach Space (D-Oh.) promised not to take funds from lobbyists. However, our friends at MajorityAP.com found Rep. Space took $4,250 from lobbyists already. Another broken from the new Democratic Majority. What a surprise.

Reuters reports that with the country falling apart, the Iraqi parliament is going out on a month's vacation. Congratulations, we've achieved American-style democracy in Iraq.

Then we report how NASA has lost $94 million in office equipment. How many businesses would stay open with that type of occurrence? (Hat Tip: Sam Adams Alliance).

We turn our attention to an arrogant University President who refuses to apologize for outlandish spending at taxpayer expense.

Finally, our national government says they don't have the resources to help Virginia deport criminal aliens. So, let me get this straight, our national government refuses to enforce the border and then won't help clean up the problem.

The Destruction of the Supreme Court

Award Nominated Podcast Show Notes

The left led by Snarlin’ Arlen Specter (R-PA) (one of G.W. Bush’s biggest mistakes was saving his 2004 primary campaign) wants to investigate (hat tip: Jill Stanek) Alito and Roberts, while a Leftist author proposes stacking the court (hat tip: Da Binkster) to address the Supreme Court going against popular opinion (apparently agreeing with 70% of the American people on Partia Birth Abortion goes against public opinion.)

Apparently, the left has never considered the concept of escalation. Liberals increase the number of judges 11, Republicans increase 15, Democrats go up to 21, Republicans go up to 29… Really, it makes a joke of our system and makes the court more political than it already is.

Also, tired of corrupt earmarks? We discuss the great common sense reform plan by Congressman John Campbell (R-CA) that lays out the conservative case. Hint to some clueless Idaho liberals, the plan is not to get rid of all federal projects, only expose them to the light of day and insure some common sense.

Finally, some great news: the adoption rate is up, but there are still some serious opportunities in the midst of the great news. We’ll discuss that.
