We Always Have a Choice

Saying that conservatives had no other choice but Bush in the 2000 primaries is a cop out that holds conservative leaders blameless for backing Bush in the face of many more honest conservatives. In addition, how do we avoid having a big spender this time around? I can't by the "we have no choice mantra." We always have a choice. We always have a chance to do better and if we don't learn a mistake, we'll continually declare ourselves victims of circumstance.

We discuss this and the following other topics on tonight's podcast:

-Vilsack Jockeying for Position
-The Poor Get Richer
-Gay Hotel discriminates against straights
-The Peril of Hate Crimes Law
-Christian Persecution in Malaysia

Politicize Everything

The following is a commentary from the Truth and Hope Report (http://www.truthandhope.2truth.com) Weekend update by Democratic Political Dave Screwtape.

There’s been a great deal of controversy over John Edwards urging people to use Memorial Day commemorations to oppose the War in Iraq. The allegation is that he’s politicizing Memorial Day.

Well, I say good for him and yes, he may be politicizing Memorial Day, but so what? Republicans and Democrats across the land already hold picnics on Memorial Day. Doesn’t that mean the day is already politicized?

For those who complain about the politicization of things, I would like to welcome you to the 21st Century. Everything is political. Those who speak of the political season are reporters who have to regularly take Metamucil. The political season is a thing of the past. Politics never ends, it only takes an occasional day off. It used to be the whole Holiday Season marked a break from politics, but given the fact that this has become the season for lawsuits against small towns for either celebrating or not celebrating Christmas, you can forget a “season” of peace on Earth.

You have two days off, as I see it: Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even those can become political as happened at my Aunt Bernice’s Thanksgiving a couple years ago when my Republican Cousin Drago decided to argue against my brilliant political points. My Aunt Bernice must have taken his side as I’ve spent the last two Holiday Seasons with fellow political consultants and we invariably spend a lot of time talking about politics. Thus, for some of us, there is no break.

Campaigns run 2-4 years, depending on the office. The Presidential election of 2008 really began sometime after Thanksgiving, 2004 with potential candidates scheduling visits to Iowa to address a little assembly here or there, to “test the waters.” Senate Candidates for 2008 are already out laying the groundwork of their campaigns. We have reached a point in our history where when one election ends, raising money and hiring consultants for the next campaign begins soon afterwards.

Service in the US House is little more than a constant two year campaign to raise more money for the next campaign. Even without campaigns, political debates, rallies, and issues are constantly in people’s faces. In addition, Congress, City Councils, and Legislatures are passing bills of great importance all year along, with elections occurring five to six times a year in some places.

The result is that there is no non-political season. There is only a demand to watch and follow along. There are those who hang on every word and become the prototypical political junkie. There are those who ignore everything and turn off politics, and never vote. Then there are the majority of Americans who are half paying attention for about two weeks before the general election.

These sort are great, because they can only stomach a vote every two to four years. These people leave the election of primary candidates, city councilman, and school boards to those who pay full attention. Because liberals generally care more about schools and insuring proper progressive community values, we elect the people who choose school curriculum, define the cultural values of cities, and raise taxes to pay for schools.

As for the rest of the ill-informed public, leave that to the political consultants. After having complicated politics to the greatest possible degree so that the average person cannot understand everything that’s going on, political consultants can then simplify complex races and issues down to bumper sticker slogans and eight-second sound bytes. Some will ask for the advice of an informed person before voting. Most are far too proud to admit that while they live in the greatest democracy on Earth, they really have no clue what their government is doing, only a sneaking suspicion that it’s not good,.

What we must be wary of this Memorial Day is not the attempts of John Edwards to gain political points, but rather those small government advocates. Those who urge making government smaller, understandable, and easily comprehensible are dangerous. If government becomes more understandable, more people will pay attention. If more people pay attention, who knows what will happen? It could mean less work for political consultants at the very least, and that’s a concept I must oppose.

Personal Ambition Destroyed the Minutemen

Feuds and and personal ambition involving Chris Simcox, Jim Gilchrist and others destroyed the Minutemen. Conservatives should take note. Personal ambition is the enemy of political change. We need to focus on change to the country, not our own personal enrichment or exaltation.

The Salesman's PItch

In my last piece, I talked about how an Idaho Planned Parenthood clinic is using an article by local abortionist Duane St. Clair to sell religious women on abortion. St. Clair’s piece is a theological defense of the practice. In the second part of this series, I examine St. Clair’s arguments.

To begin with, Dr. St. Clair readily admits that life begins at conception:

”There is no debating it is a live ovum and sperm that unite at the beginning of pregnancy; human life began thousands of years ago and has been a continuum ever since.”

A quite stunning admission from the abortionist, but at least an honest one given the current state of Embryology.

He then goes on to write:

”The important question is not when life begins but when does ‘morally relevant personhood’ begin?”

So, Dr. St. Clair, having utterly been failed by science begins liberal
theological gymnastics typical of the pro-choice crowd. Ironically, towards the end of his argument, St. Clair infers religious motives to pro-lifers (emphasis original to the document):

Others believe there is a soul present in the fertilized ovum, and therefore they feel it must be a person. However, they realize they cannot discuss their fear is that a soul may be present without the Constitution of the United States limiting them in their attempts to legally prohibit abortion. Believing in a soul is clearly a religious belief; so they continue to use the terms person and unborn child.

So thus Dr. St. Clair leads us to a debate outside science, coming down to a basic debate over personhood and the presence of a soul. Advocates of the pro-choice position claim to be about science and reason, not religion and philosophy. Yet, as many advocates before him have done, St. Clair rejects science for a philosophy that arbitrarily denies human rights to million. .
The other points, I’ll merely summarize as these points have been vigorously debated over the Internet:

He makes the silly argument that abortion is okay due to the number of miscarriages that occur. Abortion is justified by the fact that there are spontaneous miscarriages in the same way first degree murder is justified by the fact that people die of natural causes.

Dr. St. Clair writes, “We must either reject all abortions or allow every woman the right decide which cases are ‘hard cases.’ No one can place a value judgment on another person’s situation.”

Here Dr. St. Clair has gone from medicine to philosophy to law. What he states isn’t true. Our legal system makes value judgments about people’s situations all the time. We take a look at one case of killing and we say, “It was in self-defense, you are therefore not guilty.” We take a look at another and say, “You were enraged and killed someone in the heat of the moment with no premeditation, you are guilty of manslaughter.” We take a look at still another case and say, “You killed this person with malice aforethought and are guilty of first degree murder.”

The Old Testament Law rings with such evaluations and judgments based on different situations. If you take a look at the law (Exodus-Deuteronomy) you’ll find a law book that examines what happens in dozens of different circumstances. For example, if a man killed another accidentally, he could flee to a city of refuge to avoid being killed by an avenging relative, if he killed out of malice he could not.

St. Clair then judges the right to life stance as unchristian (and by extension those who advocate for it) by ironically citing the “Judge not” scripture, thus judging the entire Pro-Life movement.

As I said, it’s fairly typical of the stuff you’ll find on the Internet advocating abortion. The only difference is that this one-sided propaganda is being handed out to young women in an attempt to influence them to have an abortion, and that is truly an outrage.

Sowell on Immigration

I love the honesty, wit, and intelligence of Thomas Sowell on this immigration issue. Writing over at Human Events, Sowell observes:

Every aspect of the current immigration bill, and of the arguments made for it, has Fraud written all over it.

The first, and perhaps biggest, fraud is the argument that illegal aliens are "doing jobs Americans won't do." There are no such jobs.

Even in the sector of the economy in which illegal immigrants have the highest representation -- agriculture -- they are just 24 percent of the workers. Where did the other 76 percent come from, if these are jobs that Americans won't do?

There's even more from Dr. Sowell's columns on Today's Truth and Hope Report, as well as discussion other stories. One of the big ones (which is in the second half) includes a conversation about Jill Stanek's piece on China's forced abortion that left Jill find Al-jazeera providing more accurate information on the MSM on riots caused by a Chinese crackdown in enforcing forced abortion laws.

The Politicians Don't Get It On Immigration

Is there anything more dense than the stance taken by the Washington Politicians on illegal immigration? People are angry as all get out and the GOP seems to have no clue that not only are they making a joke of our national security, they're ticking off the base and they've ticked them off big time. There will be a price to pay if they don't mend their ways.

We talk about this issue and more on tonight's Truth and Hope Report.

Screwtape: Looking for Someone to Loathe

The following comes from the “Screwtape Reports” feature on “The Truth and Hope Report” Podcast (http://www.truthandhope.2truth.com) Democratic Strategist Dave Screwtape does his first podcast

Hello, this is Dave Screwtape welcoming you to the new Screwtape Reports podcast. I’ve gathered from several sources that this is a way to make large amounts of money, and having blown my earnings from the 2006 cycle on what a Christianists would call “riotous living,” I could use the extra cash.

As the end of the BushCo Administration draws near, we as Democrats face a difficult choice. I’m not referring to the choice for our party’s nomination, but rather for the position of Universal Loathed individual (ULI). Reading Congressman Blumenauer’s letter stating that he would not run for Senate due in part to the amount of campaigning that Karl Rove would require of him reminded me, that soon, to paraphrase Richard Nixon, we won’t have Karl Rove to kick around anymore.

Nor will we have Bush or Cheney after January, 2009. While we may loathe and despise them just as much, they’ll no longer be motivating factors, and that is when things get dangerous.

In the past we’ve been able to channel our hatred for ULIs into electoral success. If we hadn’t hated Richard Nixon so much, how would we have achieved such great victory in 1974? Let’s be clear that we can make mistakes with ULIs. Rush Limbaugh failed to do his duty in motivating Democrats during his tenure (1993-95) and we wisely replaced him with Newt Gingrich (1995-99). Our failure to fill this office from 1999-2000 led to our so-called “defeat”.

A good ULI will have several characteristics:

1) Political Power-This was our mistake with Limbaugh. He has a large listening audience, but unfortunately without political power, we are unable to make the American people afraid of him.

2) Human Flaws: This is helpful. We’ve for a long time worked to undermine Bush’s credibility by pointing out his penchant for making verbal gaffes. The American people bought into it and his credibility has declined on other issues as well. We should note this is not the same as making fun of someone because of a physical disability to be cruel. This making fun of someone’s disability in order to score political points, which is entirely different.

3) Courage: A good ULI will have some convictions they will fight for. When they fight you, you paint them as the bad guy in the media. Lacking this ability to fight creates huge problems. I was around during the first Bush Administration when we were trying to make George Bush I the ULI. A man who gives so easily under pressure does not need to be loathed by us, his own party will do it for us.

Now, if Republicans win (the higher power of your choice forbid), we should have easy work. We can attack Giuliani as an arrogant violator of Civil Liberties, McCain as a maniac, and Romney as taking orders from the head of the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City. Please note this is not like the fear of JFK taking orders from the Vatican.

Obviously should another candidate win, we’ll find another method of attack. However, as the media is the true god of the political process (just ask all the Christians who are looking to them to find out which candidates to vote for) I find that improbable.

If, on the other hand, we win the White House, we have a severe problem. There is simply a lack of loathworthy characters n the Republican leadership. John Boehner is the 21st Century’s Bob Michel, an amiable man who will set records for the number of years served as minority leader. In the Senate, there’s a little more hope. Mitch McConnell is someone I could come to loathe, but polls in Kentucky show his seat in jeopardy. Should he be defeated, we’ll likely see Trent Lott as Minority Leader. While Lott makes loathsome statements, his poor strategy makes him far more laughable than loathable.

Thus we could be in a difficult spot. When we have no one to loathe, we actually have to focus on governing. When that happens, often some little known figure we didn’t think to loathe can rise up and become our worst nightmare. Regardless of what happens in November, 2008, we must figure out who will be the next GOP leader and unite in our loathing of them before it’s too late.

Imagine a Presidential Candidate..

Imagine a Presidential Candidate who will tell you the truth, not in some fake polished attempt at "Straight Talk" but the honest, politically incorrect truth. He'd be no jerk, but he'd pick no bones about it. Imagine a candidate who tells you:

"Amnesty solves nothing. Yes, Ron Paul, American policy explains why some people hate us, but that's no reason for America to stop being who she is and to retreat from the world. Campaign spending limits are a joke that only enable special interests. We need to cut government, and by the way here are some programs we can start with."

Imagine a candidate who hadn't spent his life planning a run for President. He hasn't purloined earmarks for constituents or raised taxes. He believes in things like America. He believes we need to take back our country and party from big government Republicans. He's ready to fight, alone if necessary because he believes in the ideals most other candidates don't take seriously outside of Lincoln Day Dinners and Speeches to the Christian Coalition?

If you're tired of career politicians, than take a look at John Cox. He appeared as my guest on a special edition of the Truth and Hope Report. Listen below and you'll hear a great interview where he talks about the War, the Fair Tax, Trade, and much more. John Cox was my guest on the Truth and Hope Report.

Yes, I support him, yes, I even blog for him, but it's because of his principles that I'm behind this campaign all the way.

The Evangelical Self-Destruction

I’m a fervent opponent of the nomination of Mitt Romney for the Presidency of the United States on the Republican side. Romney’s multiple flip flops right before running for president paint a portrait of a man who will say whatever it takes to get elected. In fact, I’m doing my best on the behalf of Governor Romney’s opponents.

I’m an Evangelical and I disagree strongly with official LDS Church views of theology, salvation, and scripture. Having said that, I’ve been disgusted by the statements of many in opposition to Mitt Romney because of his Mormon faith.

In 21st Century America, there exists people who look at Mitt Romney and see “the Mormon” and their arguments against his campaign run no deeper than his religious beliefs. This is troubling and dangerous for many reasons.

It is troubling on the first account, because the attacks show none of the love nor charity that Christ commanded. Indeed, the attacks have been based on fear, particularly the fear that having a Mormon in the White House will create new Mormon converts. As I’m sure you remember, thanks to JFK being elected, the entire country converted to Roman Catholicism and under President Bush everyone has become a Methodist. Oh wait, Americans pretty much keep their own religion, regardless of what faith the President adheres to, but I guess all that will change with a Mormon in the White House.

The second point is that this is a good way to create tension for Evangelicals living in areas with large LDS populations. From Idaho, I have a message to folks in Alabama, some of us live in areas where we see Mormons somewhere other than on HBO. Mormons and Evangelicals share many issues of common cultural concern, and over the years have been allies in key issues like the pro-life fight, the defense and the struggle to keep God in the public square. As has been the case with many Orthodox and Conservative Jews, we have been able to put aside our disagreements in the name of advancing the best interests of our community. That type of coalition is threatened with prejudice.

Third, it denies a basic American principle of fairness. The mass of people who are opposing Mitt Romney for his Mormonism alone, have no problem with Mormons enlisting and going off to fight their wars. They have no problem with Mormons being the police officers that protect their lives from criminals. But a Mormon actually serving as President is too much for them.

When one looks at a candidate for office, you don’t need to agree with his religious faith, but rather their governing philosophy. In Montana, there’s a man who is unabashedly pro-life. He has fought for lower taxes, less government, and to change that state’s monstrous Supreme Court. He had a positive view of public acknowledgments of God His brother was my mother’s doctor and traveled hundreds of miles to testify for pro-life legislation. Both this man (Rob Natelson) and his brother were Jewish. I supported Mr. Natelson when he ran for Governor, because what mattered most were his policies and his understanding of the role of government. That far exceeded the Protestants he ran against in 1996 and 2000.

In 2000, after all the pundits had declared the Presidential Primaries over, Utahans gave Alan Keyes his largest vote percentage anywhere in the country (23%.) They saw beyond his religion to the man he was and the principles they shared. They considered the merits, and that is what we should judge Romney on as well.

Finally, all Evangelicals should be disturbed by the idea that theological beliefs that will not affect a candidate’s ability to govern are matters for which we should disqualify candidates for office. While many conservative Christians back disqualifying Romney for his Mormonism alone, so do liberals like Slate’s Jacob Weisberg, who wrote that what made Mormonism different from mainstream Judaism and Christianity is that “the world's greater religions have had time to splinter, moderate, and turn their myths into metaphor.” Thus, those who believe the seminal tenets of Christianity (i.e. the Resurrection, the Virgin Birth, etc.) will find themselves getting the same treatment being dished out to Romney. While according to a recent poll, 37% would not vote for a Mormon President, 21% would not vote for an Evangelical.

Imagine a campaign where an Evangelical Candidate is brought under fire by the media and constantly asked if they believe in the truth of John 14: 6 (Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and that no one comes to the father but by him), do they really believe in the Virgin Birth, do they really believe that Jesus actually rose from the dead? If so, they will be declared utterly irrational and unqualified for office by the same people with whom those attacking Romney’s Mormonism find themselves in agreement. Believe me, a belief that Jesus is the only way to Heaven will be far more controversial than the LDS three-tiered after-life where nearly everyone makes it to Heaven in some form, save the most wicked.

Conclusion

America is a unique nation. From the beginning, we have acknowledged God as the guarantor of our rights, and even the most impious of the Founders knew that we needed His guidance and care. Yet, at the same time, we have practiced religious toleration, leaving each man to work out his “own salvation with fair and trembling.” (Philippians 2:12)

Certainly, there are forums to debate the merits of Mormonism. The Presidential election is not one. When I look at Mitt Romney, I see a man I can’t trust because I don’t believe he has a core. I see a power lust that is present in men who profess all kinds of faiths, and no faith at all, that leads him to say what he thinks will benefit him at the moment. Maybe others will see something else. Whatever we see, hopefully when we look at Mitt Romney as a candidate, we’ll judge him not on Mormonism, but on merit.
